Some examples of the use of scanning electron microscopy to identify fracture modes are shown below:




Plastic deformation initiating from carbide particles in steel indicates failure from tensile overload.


   
 Non oxidized intergranular fractures without plastic deformation indicates failure by hydrogen embrittlement of Hastelloy X  Smoothing of grain faces during intergranular failure of 6061 aluminum indicates overheating close to melting point of material.
